Our Programs

1.Mentoring: Studies show that one  in every three young people grow up without having a mentor! Our mentorship program offers young girls and boys inspiration and support to find the right path. Mentoring the young:

  • Builds  self-esteem
  • Provides knowledge and enables young girls and boys to explore different career opportunities not often available in a classroom or work setting.
  • Breaks down stereotypes surrounding certain professions and populations.
  • Promotes awareness of a community's diversity.
  • Teaches the young about teamwork, networking and friendship.

2.Education: Nationally, one in four children grow up illiterate ,often because their parents can’t read.

If children can’t read, they cannot do well in school, and they end up dropping out due to hardships. Our education program is focused on improving literacy/Education amongst the youth through:

  • After school academic coaching to help them improve academically
  • Providing at risk youth with books to improve their reading skills.
  • Providing at-risk youth with computer skills (& equipment)to increase their participation in the digital learning.
  •  Helping at-risk youth, stay focused and disciplined to complete high school .

3.Gender Based Violence(GBV):  GBV continues to plague communities worldwide -from female genital mutilation, child marriage and human trafficking to domestic violence and homicide. Statistics show that :

  • 10 million children are victims of child sexual exploitation/sexual violence in their lifetime.
  • Over 200 million girls have experienced genital mutilation.
  • 15 million girls are marries before the age of 18(i.e  28 girls every minute) each year.
  • 10 million children are victims of child sexual exploitation.
  • 1 in 4 girls experience School-related gender-based violence .
  • As many as 150 million girls worldwide are raped or subjected to sexual violence each year, usually by someone in their family circle…..and over 90% of these girls drop out of school when they get pregnant!

...This is just a snap shot of the struggles women/girls across the globe face….

ACOH believes we need to do more to combat and raise awareness of violence against women, girls and other vulnerable people (e.g. BIPOC ) .There are many cases were victims of violence grow up to become abusers themselves. ACOH is therefore working with the youth (adolescents /teenagers  up to 19 years) to promote gender justice through our after school program.

Our goal is to :

  • Educate (create awareness) the youth on how to become advocates for teenage social issues like teen dating violence, child abuse, sexual violence and other social issues like racism.
  • Support survivors/victims of gender violence through education and mentorship.
